Where can I buy cheap airfare to Chicago, and how many days in advance will give me the best deal?

I need to get from Memphis to Chicago next weekend. I'm really hoping to go by plane, so I need to know what websites or other agencies you would recommend for me to buy cheap tickets.

Also, the closer the departure date comes, will the ticket prices go lower or higher?

Three nights ago, I saw tickets going for $275, and the following night, it jumped to $420. I'd really like to know if the prices will go down as the day gets closer as I've missed out on the $275.

Also, are there other ways to get cheap tickets? Coupons? Codes? Other agencies that aren't so known?

I'd really appreciate your help as I'm trying to get to Chicago on July 16th (next Friday already!).
